before start of year, had functional 2007 macbook pro. lion installed, machine stable, , provide semi-usable experience in performance-hungry applications aperture.
earlier year, however, started getting occasional kernel panics. gradually increased in frequency , began encounter difficulties startup. apple hardware test , disk utility did not identify issues. able booted after several attempts, , after trying boot installation disk.
then, computer not start @ all. tricks--pram, smc, safe boot, nothing boot. couldn't boot installation disc or lion usb.
@ genius bar, seemed think might windows partition. wiped harddrive still couldn't boot installation. tested memory , else , concluded issue logic board, kind of "by default" understood. estimated $500 cost them repair, not prepared stomach.
after brining home, i've tried booting installations of tiger, leopard, snow leopard, , lion no avail. receive kernel panic in all. when running in verbose mode, install stops after printing airport ethernet address. i've attached snapshot of output during install load, if there on board can glean form it.
here questions:
1) how logic board issue (i'm still worried identified issue "by default")? safe bet if repair logic board or install new logic board issue go away? again, log install attached if provides additional insight.
2) if machine has logic board failure more have subsequent failure? need make sure cooling system or other components of computer functional ensure new logic board have longevity?
3) experience logic board repair (~$199) vs. replacement (~$299)? i'm planning on doing swap myself. i've replaced hard drive , lubricated fan , feel pretty comfortable internals of computer. ifixit guide shows logic board replacement requiring few more screws, , application of thermal paste. guess either send in current board repair or swap used 1 off ebay. genius bar supposedly confirmed board not 1 one of nvidia issues. if used 1 somewhere else taking big chance? if current 1 repaired how it'll last?
4) should sell machine parts? looks machine "for parts" goes $150-$200 on ebay. working machine goes $500-$600. price differential cost of logic board.
advice or information appreciated! pains me think of selling such great machine parts, might best choice. wanted invest in new high performance imac photo , video editing, might need invest in new laptop first. love ipad, i'm not prepared life without working laptop (different discussion, though).
