Disk Utility is not functioning properly

noticed disk utility not functioning properly. after starting tool all options greyed out. i’ve managed run permissions repair use of terminal command:

code:

diskutil repairpermissions /

make disk utility functional used - suggestions welcome.

 

which mac os x version use , exact hdd (internal or external, system or data hdd) want permissions repaired?
