Snow Leopard Security Update Kills PowerPC Apps Using Rosetta

while odd "cui error" experienced users after upgrading os x 10.7.3 earlier week has garnered fair amount of attention, appears security update released mac os x snow leopard @ same time causing major issues users rely on older powerpc applications run under apple's rosetta framework.

security update 2012-001 released alongside os x 10.7.3 on wednesday in order bring of security fixes found in os x 10.7.3 users still running mac os x snow leopard. noted in several discussions @ apple's forums (1, 2, 3) , elsewhere, users experiencing variety of problems rosetta apps following update, including repeated crashes when trying use commands applications' main dropdown menus.

users reporting significant number of applications being affected issue, including microsoft office x , 2004, older versions of adobe photoshop, quicken, filemaker 7, , various other applications had been written run on powerpc chips used in apple's older machines.

apple's transition intel, company developed rosetta framework allow applications continue function on new hardware. apple has discontinued rosetta in os x lion, still included optional install in mac os x snow leopard , number of users have continued use powerpc applications on systems either because not wish upgrade or because newer versions not available.

noted in apple discussion forums, 1 user has worked create patch address issue, patch not yet appear work rosetta applications.
those have spoken apple customer service issue have received varying responses, notes company doesn't yet know problem claims there no issue , rosetta support has been discontinued, latter being unlikely true given change occurred minor security update.

hate never update unless need there issue. havent updated using security patch yet until been sorted out, , lion? whats that?
