Resolved Slow performance on external cinema display... Is this a graphics card problem?

hi,

have 2.8 ghz intel core 2 duo macbook pro 15". few months ago purchased refurbished 24 inch led cinema display.

lot of music production using ableton live noticed can't expand ableton window full resolution (edge edge) of cinema display because ableton's performance becomes sluggish (works fine on macbook pro screen)

until assumed problem ableton, upgraded final cut pro x , found similar problems when expanding final cut pro use full space of cinema display.

i'm wondering ... possible graphics card in macbook pro isn't powering cinema display? although doesn't quite make sense macbook pro circa jan 2010 , believe cinema display too. it's unlikely apple have made mac couldn't power display of same age... right?!
way, macbook pro has 8gb ram, isn't ram issue.

thoughts?

edit: can resize windows of applications without problem

it's possible guess eh, model has logged out switch graphics cards? graphics settings have in energy saver in system prefs?
