i not scientist, a/v professional or otherwise number cruncher. man craves speed , know have fastest machine available. have been dreaming of mc pro last 7 years.
computer:
1. use server (15 users, light use - not central, become so);
2. (once or twice week several hours @ time) use photoshop , other cs5 programs;
3. (once or twice week several hours @ time) rip cds , dvds handbrake;
4. virtual machines (all day, every day);
5. 10-15 business productivity applications day every day (including adobe acrobat, seems inordinately drain resources).
goal: never see spinning beach ball ever again. right now, have x25-e, 8 gb ram , 2.66 duo core mbp. see spinning beach ball relatively often. ram usage high (yesterday had less 500mb free significant period of time), might see 80-100% cpu spike once day.
think know answer question, 6 - core stupid waste power here?
i think if you've been dreaming of tasty mcpro (with side of fries) 7 years, you'll "hunger" it, , wonder what-if until one. on other hand, dream after have one? never-ending problem.
6-core make few times use adobe apps more pleasant. peace of mind worth you? it's waste, others it's not.
have been resisting purchase of ssd long time, because feel it's senseless luxury me save 3 minutes day in boot / program loading time... yet caved in , ordered crucial m4 ssd last night. ordered new usb 3.0/ esata pci card allows hot swapping replace cheap $50 esata card owc, because have been getting annoyed rebooting in order mount esata drives, , more people giving me usb 3.0 devices data transfer. it's in name of ending "what like" voices in head, worth something.
