Locked Files

please bear this little longwinded!
after managing kill original macbook pro cup of coffee, transferred files on hard drive brother in laws macbook. dead macbook pro sent away insurer insisted hard drive inside. insurer gave me brand new macbook pro after transferring files brother in laws macbook unable access them. ive tried obvious things no luck. files contain photos last 10 years appreciated.
