New hard drive restored from Time Machine backup won't show files?

hi there!

had hard drive die out in imac , bought/replaced bigger one. used external hard drive had backed important files using time machine & restored them new drive.

when @ information new drive says 300gb in use when try searching of files (even file extensions .ai or .jpg) nothing comes up.

has else experienced before? i've been searching online try find answers haven't found that's quite i'm experiencing here.
