What is happening to my hard drive space?

so, have 2011 imac 1tb hdd.

have, apparently, 327gb free despite disk inventory x & omnidisksweeper telling me i've used 278.3gb.

heck lion doing storage?! it's nothing logs, i've deleted them, it's not mail downloading attachments infinite times (it's taking 2.8gb , have lot of email on computer) and, so...i'm out of ideas. going 'about mac' reveals whopping 420gb taken 'other', cannot right.
