Dumb question about buying iPad upon launch

i have gift card , have been waiting ipad 3 launch rather impatiently. many people, anticipating march 7th release, scheduled surgery day. d:

not mention don't know best way to buy apple product upon launch. sounds first come, first served? presumably locations have more units in stock matter of timing , luck? since have gift card must go through apple.

surgery i'm pretty screwed day , days after (which sucks since nice thing have during recovery, eh?) nearest apple store hour+ away. perhaps makes sense buy online , wait? if recall takes while.

apologise not knowing how apple handles sales when releasing new items, i'm curious , use fastest reasonable method of purchase assuming release day rumoured. want know options are. if can afford or want 1 particular configuration screwed while until rush over? never paid attention before, i'm hoping won't weeks after release waiting for.
