Can Apple TV HD 1080p go full screen?

hi everyone. new apple tv , purchased 3rd generation. have 1080p tv , when rent movie in hd in 1080p don't understand why not fill screen. seems widescreen , not full screen? when u way pitch dvd in widescreen mode.

there anyway have full screen in hd? hope makes sense.

it depends on aspect ratio of film, if 2.35:1 , not 16:9, have black bars on top , bottom, hdtv has 16:9 aspect ratio (1920/1080 = 16/9).
