some things obvious...external cosmetic defects, cracked screen, doesn't power properly, screen colors way off, et cetera.
but, assuming 1 @ apple store , in process of buying new ipad, there list of check make sure unit you're buying @ least superficially problem free?
example, if has bad pixel, what's best screen might on ipad can see it?
there list of these kinds of hints?

, check light bleeds. tilted ipad downwards 30 degrees, , noticed entire top portion of ipad bleeding light. wish took picture of it, exchanged ipad , got problem-free one.
