Upgrading OS using target firewire mode

so, upgrading friend's macbook pro (old, core 2 duo, 2.33 ghz) sl. on tiger (10.4.x). initially, cd drive wouldn't take sl installation disc, take other dvd's. cleaned sl disc , accepted it. however, whenever hit "restart" continue installing sl, computer reboot , spit sl disc out. did googling , concluded cd drive failing. not worth pay new 1 computer 5 years old.

figured out use macbook pro in target firewire mode since know disc drive working. began installation, computer rebooted start installing sl, , seems stuck (has been showing spinning loading icon on 1.5 hours now). both machines still connected via firewire, , i'm going leave them way overnight, should do? how can safely unconnect them? appreciated.

thanks.

do use 29 usd mac os x 10.6 snow leopard upgrade dvd?
