HUGE Other Files on HD

have mac mini bought 6 months ago. has 500gb hd have filled up. when @ properties has 286gb in other category. have 1.5tb external hard drive running time machine if backup of sort, don't need on mac. best option find file? think should somewhere in 250gb range @ point.

for space issues not explained above, there few things can try, of may or may not apply:

• begin restarting computer first step. resolves issues.
• for time machine users on notebooks running lion, space may being consumed time machine local snapshots, can disabled.
  os x lion: time machine's "local snapshots" on portable macs
• search finder see if space being consumed large file or several large files. adjust 50gb in illustration whatever size deem appropriate.

• use omnidisksweeper, jdisk report, disk inventory x, daisydisk or grandperspective see how space being used on drive. of these apps may show more detail others, try several.
• check drive disk utility: using disk utility verify or repair disks
• try re-indexing drive: spotlight: how re-index folders or volumes
