with arrival of ipad retina display , iphoto ios, 1 of first questions wondered if itunes sync higher-resolution versions of photos relatively small versions feeds ipad 1st generation. i'm happy report answer yes!
while ipad (1st generation) fed scaled down version of photos (1536 x 2312) itunes, ipad (3rd generation) can handle , fed larger sizes. appears ipad (3rd generation) gets whatever preview aperture has generated based on settings you've set in "previews" pane of aperture application preferences.
when had photo preview set "fit within 1920x1920", that's ipad (3rd generation) ended with. when set photo preview "don't limit", ipad (3rd generation) got full resolution jpg preview. there's quality control slider here determines compression on scale of 1 12.
test of this, deleted ipod photo cache aperture bundle, set photo preview settings "don't limit", , regenerated previews. synced same 2 photos (one vertical , 1 horizontal) each ipad, , each ipad emailed photos desktop mac check sizes.
ipad (1st generation):
photo 01, 2312 x 1536, 1.1mb
photo 02, 1536 x 2312, 1.1mb
ipad (3rd generation):
photo 01, 4288 x 2848, 3.2mb
photo 02, 2776 x 4180, 2.8mb
maybe case ipad 2, since not own 1 not test it. hope information useful else. wants take advantage of retina display or use iphoto ios it's fullest, you'd want highest resolution possible.

i did testing myself on photo 2736 x 3648 (10mp) canon s95. master jpg 2.1mb , shot using auto settings. these size of previews different compression settings shown:
don't limit
12: 6.2mb
11: 2.5mb
10: 2.2mb
9: 1.9mb
8: 1.7mb
2560
12: 4.1mb
11: 1.4mb
10: 1.2mb
9: 961kb
8: 784kb
1920
12: 2.3mb
11: 711kb
10: 612kb
9: 501kb
8: 411kb
half (1824)
12: 2.2mb
11: 768kb
10: 650kb
9: 520kb
8: 419kb
since use ipad photo viewing rather editing think i'm going go 2560 image quality setting of 10. aperture library become enormous if set higher setting. 18000+ photos in library expand 18gb previews setting.
