Having trouble replacing hard drive

hi there, bought macbook in 2007, , have replaced hard drive once (i had apple care had them take care of it) , within last year hard drive failed again. unfortunately apple care had expired decided replace hard drive on own. after researching , buying wd 320gb sata mobile 5400/8mb 2.5" internal hard drive, , trying install hard drive start disc came mac (and tiger operating system), i've come across few issues. first issue mac registering hard drive 2.3 tb... naturally assume problem hard drive. went store, , exchanged hard drive. again, after trying install hard drive, registered hard drive 2.3 tb... (obviously not mind having 2.3 tb price of 320gb.. when things true means there's problem) second issue i've been having tried erase blank hard drive, , have tried partition hard drive well. every step take pretty ends in "[whatever step take] failed. input/output error" know why happened/happens? , know how fix it? please , thank you! i'm desperate mac lol

might cable between hard drive , motherboard. i've been saying lot lately, take or leave it. might worth shot see if that's problem.

broke twice. both times "sort of" read , write hard drive. lot of things tried failed (like partitioning or reinstalling lion).
