Photo storage/workflow ideas

so photo library crossed 10,000 image mark, , realized iphoto library 40gb. replaced aging macbook's hard drive 128gb ssd. such limited space, i'm looking way store photos. i'd keep photos (recent ones , perhaps selected meaningful ones previous years) on computer, if possible. i'm wondering photos. work entirely off of external drive? manually copy photos external?

hobbyist; don't need/want fancy (read: expensive). ideas?

i use picasa. it's free , more user friendly iphoto. iphoto, realise there duplicates in hard drive.

picasa, dump external drive in named folders. picasa scan designated folder (say pictures) new pictures , every time update folder, new pictures show on picasa.

being paranoid hard drive failures, have backups on multiple hard drives, including nas.
