Can the iphone appear as an external device?

i'm new mac, having used pc's many years. when used connect iphone 4 pc appear separate drive/device in "my computer" open , drag , drop photos , video files iphone pc.

if want photos iphone using mac have import iphoto or imovie/fcp x, find these files have been stored , transfer them want them. there way can see iphone external device can drag , drop photos , video, without paying lot of money? i've seen program called phone disk, cost £12.99 ($21). hoping find free app, or 1 69p ($1.1).
