syslogd off the rails on 10.7.3 - power cycle to fix

i'm pretty sure wind being isolated incident me, thought i'd document anyways:

* 10.7.3
* 2008 macbook unibody, 8g ram
* cpu goes 200% , stays there, syslogd 175%
* fans kick after couple of minutes
* system becomes unresponsive
- can't open console (bouncing in dock only)
- can't open activity monitor (bouncing in dock only)
(i use istat menus watch... stats in the... menu bar)
- beachball appears
- mouse freezes/locks in place
* reboot vía power button (sad!)

after rebooting, there's nothing of note in console time period in question.

oh well. did google search , not see. no logs -> nothing troubleshoot.

me too.

started seeing issue on afternoon of 31 mar 2012.

didn't have activity monitor or console running - first noticed fans on mbp 17" going nuts. machine unresponsive. beach ball move no input possible: had power-cycle machine back.

after couple of these ran activity monitor , noticed syslogd pegged @ 100%.

checked console. wasn't clear app going crazy excess logging - looks syslogd overwhelmed , couldn't write disk (ssd in case).

i've seen suggestions 1 should clear asl.db because it's big. other people have suggested killing syslogd (no! - other app issue). others have mentioned time machine (now disabled). i've been trying disable non-standard (canoscan 9950f kernel extension, expresscard sata drivers) no joy.

in last iteration thinking: maybe it's itunes update applied (there warning in system log wirelessly sync'd iphone , ipad). issue occurs without itunes running. maybe background sync? disabled "sync wirelessly" feature both devices.

if give me guidance troubleshooting i'd happy. @ moment machine usable in 2h increments - if i'm prepared power off/on every 2h.
