noticed several users running developer preview version of os x 10.8 mountain lion, apple no longer including x11 application running software through x window system interface. popular option scientists , others seeking run specialized unix software both on local machines , across networks, x11 has been available on os x number of years , has been included default install since mac os x leopard.

x window system has extensive open source history, development on mac side being handled under xquartz project. apple's x11 application has been based on effort, although many open source projects bundled use in commercial software, x11 has been behind latest xquartz releases. current version of x11 2.6.3, while xquartz available in version 2.7.0.
mountain lion, apple seems eliminating dedicated support x11 application, instead redirecting users open source xquartz project, continue support.
