so on holidays, got sandisk ultra ssd (120gb, sandforce 1200-series controller). unfortunately, have 2010 mac mini, first unibody model. unlike current model, it's not officially possible install ssd in place of optical drive (the independent mac shops called said parts listed 2011 model).
since still want run boot camp (which requires internal drive), decided hook new ssd via owc fw800 case. grabbed refurb of mercury on-the-go case (the clear one, opposed aluminum one).
although firewire bus caps real-world data rate @ ~80mb/s, ssds go beyond speed sequential reads , writes. random access, ssds offer benefit, first-gen sandforce drives within firewire's ceiling.
testing, timed how long took mini boot , restore session, including 25 apps, 6500 emails, safari 16 tabs, , eaglefiler database 14,000 documents. told, computer uses 4gb of ram when loaded.
here times:
hdd (internal 5400 rpm) boot drive, 3.5" (fw400) user folder:
6:20
ssd (external usb2) boot drive, 3.5" (fw400) user folder:
3:45
ssd (external fw800) unified boot/user drive, 3.5" (fw400, chained off of ssd) itunes library , few other files:
2:30
so, long story short, if fw800 ssd not fast native sata, can still improve boot times. system whole more responsive.
bonus fun fact learned: hooking fw400 device fw800 device *does not* degrade whole channel fw400. years had taken myth truth without investigating it, appears firewire chips have supported 'bilingual' mode quite time.
cool post! understanding of parts used convert mac mini handle second hard drive compatible 2010 models too. might want check article more details on how it.
