No signal bars and orange carrier logo??

hey guys,
bought faulty iphone in pieces , put together. before putting sim in wanted erase on last owner, restored same firmware on (by downloading same firmware of internet , holding shift in itunes). anyway ive put sim in (which cut size myself) have no bars of signal yet next signal bar indicator says "orange". cant make or receive calls, emergency numbers. interestingly though can surf orange mobile website on phone off 3g?? no other sites though orange website. im confused!!

phone came gevey sim chip thing? im not familiar im guessing last owner may have used it? perhaps messed when tried restore normal firmware on top of that? ideas on how fix guys? i've tried restoring 5.1 im stuck on bloody 5.1 still no signal..

gevey sim method of unlocking iphone. according site, doesn't support 5.1, unless backed , restore 4.10.1 baseband. gevey sim required jailbroken device. since installed ios 5.1 software update , baseband, [redacted/censored] iphone. can't make calls because cellular function of device destroyed. let me bit more research on site, , i'll you.
