DVI to HDMI Macbook Pro 17"

hi there,
have macbook pro 17", screen stopped working laptop still turns on. have dvi (not mini) hdmi cable. wondering how can connect hdtv , use monitor? tried plug in, no signal. i'm assuming not plug , play...? there other way? btw laptop model a1229 macbook pro 17".

please?????

 

i have 2008 mbp connected m hdtv , connects autmatically. if doesn't work way, go system preferences (while tv connected) , switch "mirror display." if still doesn't work, check cable or switch dvi rgb.
