Can't stay connected to hotspot

i got verizon 4g lte ipad , i'm having trouble hotspot feature.
can connect hotspot without problems using iphone 4s on at&t.
however, 5-10 minutes after lock ipad screen, hotspot connection disappears on iphone , goes at&t. if in wifi settings on iphone, not show ipad ssid.
when unlock ipad , go settings, hotspot shows "on" wireless says "not connected". if select wifi, change "on" , hotspot working again.

called apple , suggestion turn off auto screen lock did nothing. went verizon store, couldn't replicate issue there. stayed connected 10 minutes left store , 2 miles down road looked @ phone , had disconnected.

ideas? guess try leaving ipad screen on, although drain battery pretty quick.
1 more thing - i'm not leaving range of hotspot, i've been within 3 feet of on testing.

 

the wifi hotspot drop connection after sleep, , not pick up. if want stay connected, tether on bluetooth. speeds slower uses less power , stay connected.
