Justice Department Gives Final Approval for Sale of Nortel Patents to Apple, Microsoft

last year, apple, microsoft, emc, rim, sony, , others banded win $4.5 billion bid more 6,000 patents bankrupt network equipment maker nortel. group, called "rockstar consortium" says has received final approval department of justice acquisition of patents.




among others, antitrust regulators federal trade commission, canadian authorities, , nortel's bankruptcy court have signed off on purchase. after purchase last year, rumored apple had contributed more half of total purchase -- $2.6 billion -- , received outright ownership of number of key patents in nortel's portfolio, other companies in consortium receiving licensed rights patents.

legal hurdles out of way, rockstar says "implement plans pursue licensing agreements companies harnessing intellectual property." in other words, expect more patent-related lawsuits.
