Surround Sound - Volume controls on KB not working/Greyed out - How to Ungrey?

hi,

i've got surround sound setup, when choose on system preferences, volume on task bar greyed out. also, can't use apple wireless keyboard volume controls.

have workaround around this?

this normal behavior. surround sound method optical, mac amplifier not used. amplification performed outside of mac. use volume on amp.
