Data occupying double amount of disk space!

hello everybody.

right in middle of process of backing user information stored on old imac g5: plugged 250gb drive powermac recognized right away, , after assigning ownership of files user , attaching external 750gb drive (formatted hfs+ case sensitive), started copying user directory of 1 of users of aforementioned imac. decided leave machine alone overnight copy heaviest directory (~190gb).

today arrived office , noticed copy process had finished, noticed in external hard drive copied files 380gb! why did happen? did machine somehow copied them twice (how?)?

1 thing prefer use terminal, , pretty sure "du -sh" gave me data sizes, plus kept monitoring process. , more importantly, don't imagine how 250gb drive store 380gb of single user.

please explain me , perhaps give advice how recover "original" file sizes?

thanks,
joe.
