Can't transfer files to External Hard Drive - This is not the typical Ext. HD Questio

i have 2011 macbook pro , older (5 year old) western digital external hard drive. have used hard drive both mac , windows. recently, however, whenever go transfer file mac wd hard drive, little transfer window pops , appears initiate transfer. however, never starts it. appears "get stuck" in initiating stage, showing 0 of 3.16 gb transferred , shows unknown transfer time. happens no matter how long leave open. again, have used external hard drive macs past 5 years without problems until now. haven't moved or modified wd hard drive, not sure happened or how solve problem. suggestions??

can tell file system used on hdd?

in windows? have run chkdsk on it?
