Need to clear new mail notification in Mac Mail

i migrated outlook native mail app on mbp using lion. inbox still shows 682 unread messages , mail icon in dock wont clear after restart , reboot. have no unread messages in inbox. have rebuilt mailbox already. suggestions?

 

highlight mail, select message->mark->as unread

same, except select mark read
