i'm thinking of buying g5 xserve they're cheap nowadays , want os x based web hosting. i've looked @ pricing os x hosting , seems cheaper self-host second hand xserve. have few questions.
1)can direct me guides how/tell me how set web server?
2)if comes no os on it, simple setting in target disk mode , installing os x 10.5 server via firewire or there way it? found guide former (http://marc.vos.net/howto/xserve/)
3)is possible host more 1 site on it, , if so, how?
4)is complicated link domains it, , again, how it?
5)how loud when it's running normal i.e not booting or performing complex operation requires lots of fan noise?
6)is complicated set ftp, , again, how it?
that's now. know that's lot of questions answers great, if it's not of them. i'm noob when comes servers, if talk super technical without explaining won't understand.
i'd hesitant use powerpc mahine server. you'd limited server 10.5.8, includes out-of-date, insecure versions of apache, php, openssl, , pretty else. can install updated versions, you'll have on own. you'll end running generic, unsupported unix server none of os x niceties.
if willing run linux, on other hand, xserve nice hardware.
case in consider running old version of os x on server internal, intranet machine that's not exposed world.
