trouble with iPod classic after accidentally disconnecting during synch!

hoping on great forum can give me guidance here. ipod classic accidentally disconnected during synching last night , since then, time try connect itunes, give me "connected' screen few moments, disconnects , tells me safe remove device! tried restarting ipod, restarting mac, everything, can't seem connect ipod computer anymore. know of tricks around issue?
