apologies if commonly asked question...
need quick, portable, external storage method (without breaking bank);
i'm considering 'iomega 500gb/1tb ego mac ii portable hard drive' http://store.apple.com/uk/product/h7766zm/a/iomega-1tb-ego-mac-ii-portable-hard-drive
7200 drive connected via firewire 800.
however, hard drive enclosure, ssd inside, connected via firewire 800 faster? i'd assume so, know little 'sata' connections , weather throttle transfer speed @ all. also, speed, should looking @ sata iii? or esata faster.
sorry complete ignorance in these matters.
finally, regards enclosures, if link , recommended devices appreciated (along thunderbolt enclosures, available in uk, have passed me by).
reading, in advance replies.
if firewire 800 fastest port besides gigabit ethernet port on mac, hdd linked suffice.
fw800 offers read/write speeds between 65 75 mb/s.
2.5" s-ata hdds 7,200 rpm offer 100 mb/s.
ssds offer 150 600 mb/s.
s-ata 1.5 gbps (s-ata i) offers 150 mb/s, s-ata 3.0 gbps (s-ata ii) double of that, , s-ata 6.0 gbps (s-ata iii) double of s-ata 3.0 gbps (s-ata ii).
anyway, 7,200 rpm hdd connected via firewire 800 won't faster ssd in fw800 enclosure when transferring large amounts of data.
ssd though faster accessing files, seek times lower. ssd connected via fw800 can used boot drive , give better reaction times internal hdd.
