okay...bear me putting in section there no section fits , relates selection hdds raid system macs-only. raid 1 system i've (as in past couple of years) used wd re4, know 7200rpm 3.5 inch enterprise class hdd. i've used 500 gb models while , while still have few years of expected service life, have issue. large media files have made 2 500 gb hdds (well 1 given mirrored) not enough, , going go 2 gb wd re4s in raid 5 or raid 6 setup...so went buy them , noticed unlike 500 gb re4, 1tb+ re4s have so/so reviews. noticed of larger wds have inferior ratings smaller ones. sub 1tb 'black' lines , enterprise lines rave, 1 tb , more 2 tb models aren't reviewed well. coincidence or have more wear increased platters? don't mind spending more on enterprise grade level want if enterprise class data protection.
in same generation of drives higher capacity drives tend less reliable. enterprise disks more reliable consumer variants.
there other brands can @ hitachi, samsung , seagate.
i'd go raid-6. still backup data. data stored on single device not backed up. there several problems raid can't protect against. raid high-availability/redundancy solution not backup.
