Installing 10.6 over 10.6

i've had problems dreaded beach ball of death , tried numerous cures, have been temporary solutions problem seems come after days.

i'm running 10.6.8 installed disks bought apple , brought date through system updates (the imac came 10.5).

people have solved beach ball of death issue booting system disk , re-installing system. tried same thing halfway through installation stopped message not being able continue. dvd 10.6.3 (or .4) , system installed 10.6.8...maybe has it?

should try run instead 10.6.8 bundled update? can run same hd perform pseudo installation from, or must copy external , boot there?

suggestions?
