Stop Mail from automatically opening!

i use gmail email , have always. seems happening periodically, "mail" app opens , wants me create account. i've done it, since removed account because rather go gmail mail. how can stop mail app opening , wanting me create account?

 

does mail open out of blue or when click "mailto" link?
assume use mac os x 10.7 lion, correct?
