TextEdit files corrupt?

my textedit keeps loading in corrupt text files after being opened after being saved.

that looks fine me, seems displaying raw rtf formatting instead of processing it. assume it's noticing there no file extension it's treating plain text. *might* able change behavior heading preferences, under 'new document' tab , changing format 'rich text' (take grain of salt, have not tried it).
