Tip: BBCode is a good use for iOS 5 text expansion

a lesser known new feature in ios inline text expansion system-wide feature. works part of auto-correct feature. type few characters, press space, , ios replaces longer (or more difficult) preprogrammed. in can used in safari, tapatalk, mail, , else keyboard (but not passwords).

set 1 of these macros, go settings -> general -> keyboard , tap "add new shortcut"

formatting forum posts (bold, italic, links, etc) done in bbcode, bbcode pain type on ios devices. have keep switching between letters keyboard , third keyboard square brackets. yesterday, hit me. why not set keyboard macros used bbcode, easy remember shortcuts let me stay on letter keyboard greater speed?

below you'll find screenshots of macros set up. thoughts? suggestions?

notes:

• the text on right goes in phrase field , text on left goes in shortcut field. i've seen several people mixed up.
• the pattern here 2 characters opening tag ("[whatever]") , 3 characters closing tag ("[/whatever]"). third character repeat of second character.
• i capitalize bbcode tags more distinguish them post text, should when editing posts. bbcode not case-sensitive.
• i use uu , uuu url links, not underline , don't have shortcut underline because don't use much.
• i don't include font size shortcuts because bbcode works differently on phpbb. intend use these shortcuts more macrumors.
• i don't have "may" or "sat" shortcuts because words themselves, although use "wed" wednesday since use word "wed."
• image tags, url tags, , quote tags require take step use insertion cursor (magnifying glass) input image url or quote attribution. in first two, assume you'll copying , pasting url anyway, , quotes wanted fill in closing quote , bracket save steps on ios.
• list shortcuts based on html.
• in cases have multiple shortcuts produce same closing bbcode tag (ex: oll , ull). creates duplication makes remembering less of problem when you're using these things (again, pattern of 2 characters open, 3 characters close).
