OSX 10.6 - applications consistently crashing

hi all,

girlfriend's 1 year old macbook has started acting up. applications have been fine, crashing before start load.

photoshop crashes during splash screen, openoffice. have uninstalled , re-installed both no joy, , moment realised more sinsister when tried install libreoffice, crashed out too.

i'm not familiar osx have no idea try beyond old uninstall/re-install method hasn't worked. i've downloaded clamxav running (i selected hard drive , clicked run, it's taking absolutely forever, god knows why, it's core 2 duo cpu fwiw , quite nippy) far hasn't found wrong...

i'd appreciate advice or suggestions, thanks!

have tried creating new login account , testing account, see if encounter same problems?
you don't need 3rd party antivirus app keep mac malware-free. macs not immune malware, no true viruses exist in wild can run on mac os x, , there never have been since released on 10 years ago. cannot infect mac visiting website, unzipping file, opening email attachment or joining network. malware in wild can affect mac os x handful of trojans, cannot infect mac unless actively install them, , can avoided basic education, common sense , care in software install. also, mac os x snow leopard , lion have anti-malware protection built in, further reducing need 3rd party antivirus apps.
