Disable icon preview in list view?

hey all, in advance tip on how this. i've tried searching, , can't seem find anything.

trying copy files 1 external hd another, in order consolidate , free 1 run time machine. fiancé has obnoxious number of pictures she'll never @ again. however, it's not place delete them, tempting seems right now.

problem copy hangs @ times because "file in use." suspect it's lion attempting preview bazillion files @ once in order generate microscopic icon next file in list view. there way disable feature?

i'm mac noob, apologies tying bandwidth on may simple fix, i'm @ wits' end. again.

correction, actual error message looks this:

"the operation can’t completed because item “100_4373.jpg” in use."
