Worth buying used?

we cannot afford new mac. considering buying used imac (2008)--can used 1 less refurbished 1 (even though there's greater risk of problems). can purchase apple care used computer , worth doing so?

 

applecare can purchased while original warranty in effect (1 year purchase.)
