The dark side of iBooks 2 / Textbooks

let me start saying no means anti apple thread. i'm huge apple fan owns multitude of products. however, after watching education keynote feel troubled. 1 reason because of apple proposing , other have seen literally nobody to.

saw ibooks 2 demo , left me little worried. owner of ipad let me use ibooks , great app! no bash @ ibooks! me ibooks great way casually read books , supplement learning. key word here supplement.

see, apple trying replace textbook in schools. personally, think quite frightening , worrying. let me explain why.

1. when saw demo, literally every page of every book filled huge videos , animations , not. actual text least populous part of page. doesn't else see negatives of this? children in todays world spend time in front of screen. technology in sense has decreased child's ability pay attention without fancy display in front of them. fear if child bought tool, have opposite effect intended.

learning me absorbing information. 1 reads information , processes it. tough thing since requires lot of brain activity, why learning hard. thats point! however, once have learned it's satisfying , stays you. method more watching documentary or television! it's not learning @ all. more watching videos small captions.

there no critical thinking involved since passive experience. person cannot read book anymore without sort of stimulation. me worsen kids lack of concentration , make them more unable sit , read proper book focus.

2. why has nobody mentioned in essence result in children staring @ screen hours on end every single day?! spend time in front screen is. if made way classrooms awful! child's eyes still developing , sensitive. outside of school play on computers , attached phones. now.. have attached screen in school well?

think there huge health implications of this.

3. again i'm not anti apple here, else wish there things without huge corporation being involved? reading books me escapism. reading books because me , book. don't want apple or google or whoever knowing every single book read , grew reading child. of information profiled , used sell me more stuff through advertising.

need throw children evils of this?

4. fear serve few purposes other make children lazy. mentioned isn't proper learning experience. schiller mentioned in keynote carrying textbooks around in bag chore! come on people! part of being kid carrying heavy bag around school! instills discipline , teaches child lesson. makes them grateful when class , can sit down , learn!

children bought on proposal more lazy , unwilling handed them on plate, or in case fancy glass screen.


there several other points idea now. let me reinforce though not anti ibooks thread! ibooks tool. should used supplement learning when necessary. can @ this. should not used primary teaching tool though , hope never makes way schools reasons stated.
