Is winterboard 1 to avoid? alternatives?

ive read winterboard battery drainer & main cause of springboard crash. longtime jailbrakers care share knowledge on this?

i've tried dreamboard find themes on top.

of tweeks can springtomize, sbs.

when changing app icons..to hd versions, or different cool icons - winterboard keeps popping ugly head up. of icon descriptions tell it's winterboard, however..some don't, goes ahead installs winterboard aswel.

i'm new jb & not sure want go editing folders/files myself change icons of do.
there outthere unlocks editing option icons? can select camera roll?
