Quad G5; under and overrated

acquired mighty powermac final replacement long obsolete still loved dual 1.42ghz mdd g4. many here grew on macs @ school, original smurftower g3 had maxed out cpu/gpu/storage.ram , used file server many years.

have there many surprises quad g5 not expecting.

heat
main computers past 5 years had been self built pc workstations machines, , not sure if due long history monolithic top of line gpus but; quad g5 not power hog nor heat maker people made out be.

when made there dual socket sli setups shame kill-o-watt , electrical furnace. hardly kicks out more head under load single core pentium 4 or k8 7800gtx way did. think due having advanced digital power phase.

either way fb-dimm(!)quad, octo or hexa core mac pro low end graphics should have no issue whipping meter in ways quad core g5 dream of.

dual core g5 processors stepping improvements or whatnot lot better apple rightfully assumed after agp g5 debacle, not apple wanted, not thermal nightmares before. liquid cooling kept due keep noise down , because heat pipe coolers had not yet reached high efficiency of last 5 years.

quad core g5 7800gtx no match nehelem based i7 580gtx when comes heating room, both hungry big ol workstations, quad g5 under load can't match i7 , nvidia fermi.
brings me second surprise

performance

saw writing on wall ppc during keynote long ago; when tiger loaded onto pentium 4. mac pro of financial pill when student. these years later quad g5 bought entirely use old pile of ppc disk, not old, ub infact, , gifted colleges on next literation on lion. have limitations on many older applications, g5 more pleasant use @ times nehelem pc.

both computers blazing fast in general use due 240gb ssd (sanforce naturally on g5) , 16 , 18gb of ram; when poorly done in application, quad g5 seems process way out quicker.

not saying mad core i7 slower, windows 7 fault; whatever reason quad g5 still powerful system half decade later , can hold head high among quad core systems of today in intensive task.

many speak of ppc in terms not outline obsoleteness software cut off, more uselessly slow next modern processors.

i'm saying no, became due corporate maneuvering, not architectural limpness. had apple continued use ppc, ibm have ramped performance go head head best core 2 did , beyond; many things there allot more decision makes best guts workstations. cost, mobility , standardization how run company , g5 died.

surprised this, surprised past month have transfered workload machine. have loved osx, didn't expect have speed me happy doing heavy work upon it.

acquired more limited , nostalgic stuff, power , endearment of not being saddled windows 7; few years main center of operation. plenty of time apple jump architecture arm or knows what.

 

i agree quad g5 still great system. mine primary setup , faster else need @ point. don't doubt continue use thing until gives ghost, more , more application developers giving powerpc finger these days, guess it'll have find secondary job eventually. presently, cs4 , fcs 3 fantastic more area of web browsers , eventual loss of software itunes end everyday use beast.
