need to unlock iPhone 4s with different carrier sim..

hi
purchased iphone 4s friend locked carrier different 1 use.

when sim in phone , turn on cannot used , displays "only compatible sim cards can used..." or whatever message.

looked online how unlock , everywhere said needed jailbreak first. tried doing absinthe, pwngetool , ziphone except cant detect iphone or 1 not connected, when is. tried dfu mode of these , same thing.

thing seems have effect redsn0w, allows phone used, gives me cydia, still says there no service , cant make calls etc. (although can still connect wireless)
when try install packages or themes or whatever cydia not work.
ive tried installing ultrasn0w cydia unlock still didnt work (no service)

have ideas should do?

if has solutions please tell me step step instructions? (
