External HD won't show up

i have new toshiba external hard drive purchased on black friday. works on windows pc friends macbook pro. not work on brand new macbook pro. formatted ntfs reformatted exfat. still doesn't work on mac.

drive doesn't show in finder or disk utility. i've heard rumors macbook pros cannot power bus powered external hds, doesn't make sense considering 3 year old dell , friends mbpro finds hard drive.

suggestions? need working.

 

they can power external hds.

assume you've tried multiple times , have ensured firmly inserted port on macbook pro, etc.

port work other devices mouse or other device? maybe have bad port.
