OSX startup disk repair-Onyx reccomends

onyx recommended start disk repair today. have not noticed issues in performance unsure think of this. using late 2011 13" mbp came lion installed. have upgraded ram 8 gb. think start disk repair necessary , do? doesn't clear out of programs , give me start scratch it?

i can tell post unfamiliar term "startup disk repair". following:

verifies / repairs disk's underlying file system structure, fixing best of ability errors finds.

equivalent of disk utility when request repair disk in both mac os x , mac os 9, same process chkdsk command in windows xp performs when run.

news: running idea, because fix minor problems before become major problems lead data loss.

bad news: if turns out disk has errors cannot fix, disk now. reformat disk, , restore backup. again, process may take while complete.
