hello all
have been trying convert .txt documents keeping track of life. stubbled on todo.txt seems offer lots of ways interact .txt documents via terminal. however, having hardest time chaing basic things in .bash_profile...first off, in home directory i.e

/users/narayanankasthuri/.bash_profile.rtf

, open , edit in text editor...is right program use...should saved .rtf file? literally trying following found on site intro terminal:
-----
open either .bashrc file. way set information displayed in prompt ps1 variable. add file:
view plaincopy clipboardprint?
ps1='->'
notice don’t put spaces on either side of equals sign; that’s necessary. save file in home directory , re-open terminal window. now, should have prompt looks this:
--------

no matter change in .bash_profile in text editor can not make happen....i know idiot please enlighten me!

you can edit .bash_profile in text editor must...

a) saved in text/ascii format not rtf format, use make plain text option in textedit

b) file must called .bash_profile no extension (no .txt or .rtf extension)
