:2e_ and .AppleDouble files

when time machine tries backup files i've downloaded web onto our recentlly purchased gnap network server, time machine issues warning of ".....file has unsupported filename!". filename being amended additional characters of ":2e_" and/or ".appledouble/:2e_" @ front of filename. result, time machine won't buckup thoses files. what's happening?

if has bearing on it, connect server address begins "afp" , file sharing has "share files , folders using ftp" checked.

i'm using snow leopard v10.6.8 on mac pro.

wow... that's odd, shouldn't possible mac os x forbids colon character in file names. chance downloading archives in old appledouble format? format old... dating 68k mac days.

worth investigating this: downloads folder located on disk (networked or external, doesn't matter) isn't in hfs format? failing that, if move files after download such folder, matters too. see, non-hfs file systems don't support resource forks - leads problems if attempt decompress mac-specific archive on such file system. recommended workaround decompress locally, move/copy contents.
