i've got intel i3 imac , did fresh reload of snow leopard week. first time went use whois command, did not work. seems hang, never spitting out information domain give it.

this works fine on other systems on network, , don't have software installed on mac think cause this. here couple of things i've tried:
• set mac use dhcp, because other systems i've tried in dhcp ip pool.
• set other working machines source-nat using same public ip use mac, , continued work after clearing local dns caches.
• disabled ipv6 (i use normally, , have never had issues).
machine replaced macbook pro never have me issues. used same private , public ip addresses, , nothing has changed in router firewalls.
use command time, , don't want have keep using ssh or web whois lookup. please help!
which whois server using?
if it's default (see 'man whois'), happens if use different whois server?
happens if use network utility.app, located in /applications/utilities, has whois tab?
of other utilities in network utility.app fail, ping or lookup?
