MBA and iMac

am going 13" new macbook air.

have 27" imac i5 late 2009 @ home.

able connect mba imac mdp or thunderbolt cable, , use imac in target display mode?

if so, has had real life experience this?
thought this, woman @ end of apple support thought not, didn't sound knew stuff..
