the point of iCloud?

hey,

got ipad 2 not long ago, , love it, has want. when bought had 5.0.1 installed thought ill give icloud go. backed great, , bet if have mac sync with, in case have one.
however, once plugged ipad in charge, , itunes started doing annoying background stuff, , after pad charged unlocked , saw stuff erased. must have pressed something, thought no worries got icloud backup. great, have no way restore backup.

question whats point if can backup not restore, unless factory reset? of course each time want factory reset annoying error messages!!

stuff wouldn't mind use icloud, not if can't restore in case formats. there away use both itunes , icloud backups?
